LMI Technologies introduced the new Selcom™ High Speed RoLine™ 1130 Sensor for high speed pavement profiling at the 20th Annual Road Profiler User’s Group (RPUG) Meeting in Austin, Texas October 26-29 2008. RPUG is an industry user group which serves as a forum for the exchange of information between end users, data collectors, vendors, construction and design engineers and researchers who have an interest in road profiles, road roughness, and pavement smoothness.

The new RoLine 1130 features laser line sensing for accurate profiling of all pavement geometries on high speed profilers at any vehicle speed. The laser line measuring principle of RoLine sensors was developed to improve the accuracy of pavement profiling for coarse textured surfaces, particularly longitudinal tined and diamond ground surfaces.

The RoLine 1130 is based on the same sensor technologies used in the earlier RoLine 1100 sensors, but provides increased frame rates and higher data density to meet the needs of high speed profilers. The RoLine 1100, which was introduced to the profiling industry at RPUG 2006, has been proven to operate accurately on all concrete and asphalt surfaces. RoLine 1100 sensors have been successfully implemented on low speed and light weight profilers since 2006.

To provide flexibility for the profiler manufacturer, the RoLine 1130 operates with two data output modes, either full profile data or the optional output using the internal bridging algorithm which reduces the full profile to a single point output representing the actual surface location. To achieve high speed operation, the RoLine 1130 is based on LMI’s FireSync™ platform, a modular, extensible architecture which allows vision components, such as lighting, cameras, embedded sensor processors, and machine-vision software, to be easily integrated into a scalable machine-vision system. FireSync solves the classic problem of synchronization between lighting, camera and processing modules to microsecond precision.

Attendees at RPUG 2008 expressed great interest in the new RoLine 1130 as solving the need to obtain accurate surface data on coarse textured pavements with high speed profilers. LMI shipped the first of these new high speed sensors to profiler manufacturers in November 2008. LMI Technologies has been providing laser based measuring sensors to road profiler manufacturers for over 25 years. Over 3,500 LMI sensors installed have proven Selcom sensors are road worthy, not affected by sunlight, temperature variations, shock and vibration.
